1. Become A Blogger
“Ling, you’re a blogger, of course you’re going to suggest this!”
Heck yeah! I’m not suggesting this because I’m biased, but because I experienced the blogger journey firsthand and know just how much you can make from it!
In fact, I’ve seen that the average blogger earns about $60,000 a year, which is equivalent to full-time jobs!
Mind you, I started with no experience whatsoever and ended up earning a full-time income after my first year of blogging. And if I can do it, you can, too!
If you’re a complete beginner, the first thing I recommend doing is to find the niche you’re most passionate about. That way, you can talk about what you love and share your personal experiences.
On the top of my head, you can talk about life as a single parent, food recipes, home organization, or other lifestyle topics for your blog!
If you want to learn a lot more about this venture, I have an ultimate guide on how to start blogging for beginners here!
2. Freelance Writing
Whether you’re in love with writing research papers, short novels, poems, or technical stuff, then you can make good money as a freelance writer.
One of the best parts of being a freelance writer is complete control over your time. Sure, you might have set deadlines from clients, but you can choose when and where you want to work. That’s why it’s one of the best jobs for single parents since you can work when the kids are at school or asleep.
Plus, there will always be a huge demand for writers. AI may be popular, but nothing beats the human touch of us writers. ChatGPT can’t make things as punny as we can!
Alright, kidding aside, you can begin your journey as a freelance writer through the right online platforms. I suggest checking open job listings on UpWork, Freelancer, or Fiverr, where companies are always looking for writers to work on their websites or academic papers.
3. Teach English Online
This is an easy side hustle from home ANY single mom can do. After all, you’ve probably been teaching your little ones English since they started talking, so why not teach other lovely kiddos the language as well?
Plus, you already have the experience working with kids like your own ones! There are tons of parents around the world always looking for a competent online English tutor for their children, so it’s worth applying for these online jobs, whether part-time or full-time.
Not only will you get better control over your schedule, but you won’t even need to leave home!
That said, you might want to get extra teaching certification, which can increase your chances of getting good-paying teaching jobs. I recommend the TEFL certification and checking companies like Preply, which can connect you with a ton of clients.
4. Become A Virtual Assistant
This is one of the best work-from-home jobs because virtual assistants get a great work-life balance, and extra training in their respective fields, and there’s always so much room for growth without having to go to the office!
You aren’t only limited to working on redundant admin tasks as a VA. There are different types of VA jobs you can apply for, depending on your interests and expertise.
Becoming a Pinterest Virtual assistant is one of them.
You can also work in industries like real estate, medicine, law, digital marketing, and many more! The tasks also greatly vary so you won’t get bored, so expect to do some interesting stuff like managing social media pages, writing for client websites, organizing client calendars, and more!
While you can start without experience, you can stand out from the competition by taking free online courses and creating an attention-grabbing resume with all your relevant experience.
Just like freelance writing, there will always be a demand for virtual assistants. Start by checking platforms like UpWork, Freelancer, and Indeed for job openings!
5. Open An Etsy Shop
If you’re looking for a job without a degree, you can always set up your own business!
Etsy is one of the top places you can sell your products, with millions of buyers checking the website. Regardless of what you want to sell, you’ll likely have a huge target audience for it already!
Racking your brain for small business ideas for your Etsy shop?
After much research, which comes from my shopping on Etsy a LOT, I recommend selling handmade crafts or cute vintage items!
Anything creative and personalized is a huge hit, especially during Halloween and the holiday seasons.
One of my guilty pleasures? Anything related to Christmas decor!
I know thousands of people are going to be preparing for the holidays soon, so it’s time to take the leap and start making cute Christmas crafts to sell!
6. Babysitting
You’ve definitely got the experience taking care of little ones as a single mom, so this is an awesome way to earn extra money on the side!
If you know any parent from your community needing a babysitter while they work or enjoy their free time, you can offer your services.
While you can earn a good amount of money babysitting, there are ways to make even more.
For example, you can offer extra services, like cleaning. Or, you may want to consider getting extra certifications, so you can earn the trust of many parents within your community.
I’m sure there are many people who work as babysitters in your area, so you can start by babysitting for your family and friends, and then letting word-of-mouth advertising do its magic.
If you’re wondering how much you should charge, take note that the national average hourly rate is about $16.75 an hour.
7. Flipping Things
If you’ve got a secret talent for transforming one’s trash into treasure, then this can be your next job opportunity!
Being able to flip things is a unique skill that you can earn a lot of money from.
There are so many different products you can flip, like shoes, clothes, handbags, and even furniture. I know amazing sellers that would hand-paint shoes in the coolest designs, or add more style to clothes from thrift shops.
If you’re into woodworking, you can also refurbish old wooden furniture and have it look new or modernized!
I recommend heading over to garage sales, thrift shops, or flea markets to look for items you can flip for profit. From there, you can sell it on various platforms like Etsy, Facebook Marketplace, or eBay. You’ll be surprised by the thousands of people who want to purchase flipped items!
8. Clean Houses
If you find cleaning therapeutic, then channel your inner Monica from F.R.I.E.N.D.S. and get paid to clean houses!
It’s a nice side gig that allows you to earn some decent cash, and you’ll never run out of clients since there will always be a homeowner who needs their house cleaned!
Besides this, you have more control over your schedule and work anytime you want to, provided that it also works with your clients’ schedules.
Some clients may even allow you to bring your kids along so you won’t have to worry about leaving them at home. Or if your kids are at school, you can take on cleaning jobs around your neighborhood.
And hey, if things go well, you can end up growing your small business and start your own cleaning company with a whole team!
