1. Freelance Writer
Some people might be intimidated by a profession related to writing. They may think they should be a well-experienced writer, hold a degree in creative writing or Journalism, or have a brain that is creative enough to perform the job well.
If you’re one of these people, let me tell you that you are completely wrong. In fact, most notable writers studied different fields, while some didn’t even go to college.
For instance, the great poet and author Maya Angelou had no degree and didn’t go to college. On the other hand, J.K Rowling, the author of the Harry Potter series, studied French and Classics.
The common denominator of these two ladies is their passion for writing. So, if you have the same passion, the more you need to try this role. Why? Freelance writing is one of the most high-paying roles out there (approximately $21.44 per hour), and you don’t need any work experience to get hired for this job.
To make money as a freelance writer, you only need English, writing, and SEO knowledge (if you want to be a content and copywriter). Meanwhile, you need a portfolio to showcase these skills.
Have you kept some of your school essays, or do you love writing poems or articles? Any written work can be kept in your portfolio.
Freelance writers usually work as content writers, copywriters, and technical writers. There are many writing roles out there, but these are the ones that are popular online. You can find these jobs on freelancing sites like Upwork, Indeed, and Fiverr.
2. Web Developer
If I had known web development would be so popular, I’d have spent less time napping and more time coding.
Sure, I’m not the only one who’s noticed the skyrocketing demand for web developers. These days, they’re as essential as doctors – without them, the digital world would flatline!
According to the U.S. BLS, the employment of web developers is expected to grow by 16% from 2022 to 2033.
Besides being in demand, the high salary makes people want to become web developers.
As per Indeed, the average salary of web developers is $80,168 per year. The keyword is, “average.” Just imagine how rich the people behind some popular social media apps like TikTok, Facebook, Instagram, and the like.
The best thing about becoming a web developer is that you don’t need to major in a computer and technology-related course in college to excel at this job.
While it’s a plus to have a school diploma related to web development, I also know a lot of people who switched careers and became successful just by taking online courses to learn the basics of JavaScript, CSS, and HTML.
These jobs likewise won’t require extensive coding experience or years working for tech companies. Just build your portfolio by taking courses, say from Coursera or Udemy, and you’re good to go.
3. Virtual Assistant
For years, people have frowned upon virtual assistants (VA), thinking they are a bunch of low-paid OOWs – overworked, overseas workers trusted enough to handle basic administrative tasks.
Sure, anyone can handle common tasks like answering emails, scheduling appointments, and managing social media accounts, but doing it well is another story.
As more businesses rely on online marketing, the trend isn’t to hire a VA worth $3 / hour but to have the best possible virtual assistant that is truly valuable to the business.
As such, most businesses are willing to pay higher salaries to the right person with the right skills.
The catch? This is one of the easy jobs that pay well. Not to mention that this gig is very flexible, allowing you to take on as many clients as you can manage.
So, as long as you can handle extra jobs without compromising the quality of work you provide to others, you can earn more as a VA. This is the secret of why some VAs earn more than $100K a year!
4. Online Tutoring
Expert on a particular subject? Love to teach? Do you have a computer? If your answers to these questions are “yes, yes, and yes,” then you would love to become an online tutor.
Many parents recognize that online tutoring is very helpful because it’s convenient, flexible, and accessible. As such, they hire a teacher (you!) to help them hone their knowledge on a particular subject.
Online tutoring is a good first job because anyone can try it regardless of age. Whether you’re a retired teacher or a college student. You can teach as long as you have skills or expertise in a subject. A bachelor’s or master’s degree is a bonus but definitely not required.
In fact, many students who want to earn money on the side have ventured into his gig. Need proof? This graduate student recently made headlines for making $114,000 from his teaching side hustle, doubling his full-time income.
However, keep in mind that making more money as an online teacher will depend on your qualifications and the online platforms you use to find students.
According to ZipRecruiter, the best high-paying jobs are Science Tutor ($48,500 – $115,500), High School Social Studies tutor ($40,000 – $100,000), and English Tutor ($30,000 – $80,000). There are many well-paying subjects, but these are the ones suitable for everyone.
To find these jobs, you can offer your services on Chegg, Wyzant, and Tutor.com.
5. Blogging
Okay, there’s no sugarcoating here. Blogging is my #1 favorite high-paying job I’ve experienced so far.
If you’ve been an avid reader of this website, you should know by now that I talk about blogging a lot. This is because it allowed me to quit my banking job to pursue blogging full-time.
Like everyone else, I started blogging as a cheap hobby with no goal of making big money. However, the online world has evolved, and big publishers and small bloggers (including me!) earn a stable income through blogging.
These blogs or websites earn through ads, sponsorship, collaborations, digital products, and affiliate marketing.
Blogging can be a job, an investment, or a business.
As a job, most of your tasks involve researching and writing helpful content for your readers. Your earnings will likely come from ads.
Blogging is a great investment, too, because it has the potential to become a reliable passive income source. For example, a post I wrote three years ago still makes money for me through ad monetization and affiliate marketing.
As a business, though, besides being your own boss, you can also integrate e-commerce business with your blog.
For instance, if you’re a food blogger and would like to sell kitchen accessories, you could use your website as an online shop and your write-ups as a strategy to attract potential customers.
6. Etsy Seller
If making handmade products or digital products is already a hobby of yours, then it’s time to monetize yourself for your creativity.
Personalized house decor, jewelry, and other small decor are popular handmade products on this platform. Meanwhile, there are many digital products you can sell online. eBooks, Canva templates, and other printables like invitation cards and greeting cards are doing well on Etsy.
Personally, I like selling digital products (I sell eBooks, digital printables, and Canva templates on my blog) because I’m 100% free to choose how and when to work.
As an Etsy seller, you’re both your boss and employer. As such, this endeavor is perfect for stay-at-home moms who couldn’t have a 9-to-5 onsite job because of the little kiddos they have to care for. Not a mom yet?
Then, the more you will enjoy the flexibility that comes with this job. You could manage your Etsy shop remotely on the island, in Thailand, or at home in your pajamas.
And speaking of Etsy shops, it’s where you should spend most of your time on (besides making your Etsy products of course). To set up a shop, create an account, set up your profile, your billing information, and start listing your items.
Once the products are available in your shop, you can start promoting and managing them.
7. Graphic Designer
Businesses of all sizes, from start-ups to big corporations, will require a graphic designer.
As a graphic designer, your job includes creating visuals, particularly social media posts, website design, product design, packaging design, flyers, and more.
A talent for drawing is a bonus, but don’t worry if you think you lack an eye for design. I’m not a graphic designer either, but I make money from my designs.
How, you ask? I create Pinterest templates on Canva and sell them online. Many bloggers who want to succeed on Pinterest love my templates, so I assure you that you can do well as a graphic designer without experience.
If you ever need design inspiration, Canva can also be your best friend. Browse the platform’s millions of designs to get ideas (don’t copy!) when making your output or portfolio.
This platform is a superhero to both pro and beginner designers because of its easy-to-use tools and design elements. Not to mention that many Canva artists share hacks online to help you make designs like a pro!
To stand out to hiring managers, make sure you have a rock-solid portfolio as a graphic designer. Assuming you have no experience working for a client, you can add the best work you’ve created. You can also highlight other software that you know, like Adobe Photoshop.
8. Personal Trainer
For those who love to work out, it’s your time to shine!
I think the hype for having personal trainers started during and after the COVID-19 pandemic when more people slowly became health conscious. Not to mention that many people also love the feeling of being fit for both health and aesthetic reasons.
Personal trainer is one of the most fun jobs that pay $40 an hour. So, let’s say you’re a new trainer working 20 hours a week; you’d make around $800 on the side.
Mind you this isn’t full-time, so you could do other high-paying side jobs or take more clients to earn more.
Depending on your area of expertise, you could get paid to work out by offering high-intensity training, simple stretching, yoga exercises, pilates training, or even weightlifting.
You can do these jobs both in person and online, but believe it or not, virtual personal trainers earn more than in-person personal trainers because they tend to get more clients.
This is because many people today want to save on expensive gym memberships, have invested in their own gym equipment, or have little time to spare to workout at a gym.
That said, you can offer your services through Zoom or FaceTime. You can also record every workout or client session and use it as content to promote your services or have extra income on the side as a content creator on YouTube, TikTok, Instagram, and other platforms.
Some personal trainers also create meal plans for their clients, which is an added income for you. Amazing, right?
