I get that brand loyalty is huge. I used the same L’Oréal Paris shampoo and Dove body wash for years because they worked and were always easy to find at my local drugstore. Sure, they cost more, but does a higher price always mean better quality?

Lately, I’ve been questioning that. In many cases, the higher price comes from branding and marketing, not better quality. That’s why I started making my own shampoo at home. It has fewer chemicals and works better for me.

DIY-ing is a great way to save money, but it’s not always practical. Luckily, many generic products offer the same quality as name brands at a much lower cost. So, let’s compare a few of these items that you should buy generic vs. name brand, so you can save a few bucks.

Are generic brands of good quality?

Yes, in most cases, the best store brand products have comparable quality to their name-brand counterparts. According to a study of 28 published clinical trials, there is no evidence that suggests brand-name medicines work any better than generic medicines. This is true for the majority of off-brand products.

These items are actually manufactured by the same brand name that you generally buy. They just use their excess capacity to manufacture and sell the same product cheaper under a generic label.

Why are generic products cheaper than brand names?

You might be thinking that if both generic and brand-name products have the same quality of ingredients, why is there a monumental price difference? The answer is simple – fancier, bigger, and bolder packaging. Moreover, manufacturers go out of their way to promote these products and make them look shiny and attractive.

If you don’t believe me, you can do a little experiment. Next time you visit a grocery store, read the ingredients of the same product from a brand name and a generic label to see if there is any major difference.

Can I save a lot of money just by switching to generics?

Yes, switching from brand-name products to generic products is one of the best frugal living hacks to save money that I have learnt over the years. According to a study, generic-label medicines are not only as effective as brand-name medicines, but they are also 80 to 85% cheaper.

Now, this price difference will vary product to product. However, the fact remains that you can save a lot of money by switching to generic labels.

Is It Always Cheaper to Buy Generic?

If we are talking exclusively about the pricing of the products, then yes, generic products always cost less. While generic label products are generally cheaper, that might not always be the case. Many times, brands come up with exciting discounts to keep their customers hooked. For example, during clearance sales, brands generally reduce their prices by 50% to 70%. They also use coupons for the same purpose. So, you should always compare prices and deals before buying anything.

1. Pantry Staples

When buying pantry staples like flour, sugar, spices, or even canned goods, freshness is what matters, and there is little to no difference in the taste or quality of generic vs brand-name products. Buying generic pantry products is one of the best ways to cut everyday expenses and save money on groceries.

2. Medication

Buying generic medicine like off-brand ibuprofen instead of Advil is not only a safe and effective alternative, but it will also help you save money. That’s because the FDA needs all generic store-brand medicines to use the same active ingredient dosage as the brand-name meds they replace.

3. Cleaning Supplies

Brands often put a lot of dollars into making their new dish soap or window cleaner look shiny and better. However, these are the most important branded things to stop buying because, in most cases, off-brand cleaning products have the same ingredients and formula. They are just as good and won’t cut a hole in your monthly budget.

4. Baking Ingredients

One of the best money-saving hacks is to stop buying branded baking powder, baking soda, vanilla extract, and other baking ingredients. They are just raw materials, and regardless of the brand, they taste and bake the same.

5. Milk and Dairy Products

Milk and dairy products are a few things that you should probably avoid buying from brands for multiple reasons. For one, most generic brand dairy products often come from the same dairy plants as branded products. Moreover, they are generally fresher than their counterparts.

6. Paper Products

It doesn’t make sense to pay double or triple the price for paper products that are one-time use. Instead, buy generic brands of paper towels, napkins, and toilet paper for everyday use. You won’t feel any major difference and save some money while at it.

7. Frozen Fruits and Vegetables

I think buying branded frozen peas, berries, or fruits for smoothies and baking is pointless. Even the off-label fruits are picked and frozen at peak ripeness like branded ones, that too from the same farms. So why not switch and save some money without compromising on quality or taste?

8. Condiments and Sauces

We all have a favorite condiment brand, like Heinz ketchup or yellow mustard. The only difference you’ll find between branded and generic condiments is the recipe. So, if you are willing to adjust to a slightly different taste, you might be able to save considerable money every month. But no need to replace your whole pantry—some memories, like fries with Heinz ketchup and cartoons, are worth a few extra bucks.

9. Cereals

Generic cereals taste just as good and are often $1 cheaper, so it may be a good swap. But if Cap’n Crunch or Fruit Loops brings joy to you or your kids now and then, then it’s okay to indulge once in a while without feeling guilty for spending more. After all, who says you can’t enjoy and live a little?

10. Trash Bags

There are different qualities of trash bags, regardless of whether they are branded or off-brand. So it makes sense to look for cheaper and good-quality options. For example, supermarkets like Aldi’s have durable off-brand trash bags that are more than good enough for daily use and cost less.

11. Gasoline

Top Tier gas generally contains more detergent additives, making it worth extra money. But what if I told you that you don’t need to pay extra for better gas? You can get the same quality gasoline from generic brands, such as Costco’s house brand or Kirkland Signature, too.

12. Juices

Generic-brand juices are almost always fresher than branded ones. That’s because, most of the time, they are manufactured regionally and undergo less processing and transportation. They even have fewer preservatives, making the switch an obvious choice.

13. Technology and Media

Don’t fall for the Apple employee telling you that only pricey, branded cables are gold. Trust me that $10 generics often work just as well as the $100 ones. That said, if brand does matter to you and you like the look and feel of the real deal, then those extra dollars might just be worth it. This advice is for the ones who care more about charging their device than charging up their image.

14. Personal Care

Branded soaps, moisturizers, and cleansers often come with a big price tag, but not always better results. Most store brands use the exact same active ingredients for way less. You can see for yourself by binge-watching some of the most health-conscious people on YouTube. I’ve done it for years, and it’s insane how there’s a whole world of wellness gurus breaking it all down—so you can spend less, dodge the hype along with false marketing, and come out looking like a glow-getter.

15. Home Tools

When you make your next trip to Home Depot or Lowe’s, check out their house brands, such as Craftsman, Husky, and Workforce. You will find that these brands build the same quality tools at a much lower cost, which is a great substitute for the overly expensive, branded home tools.

16. Pet Food

Who doesn’t love playing with their pets, chatting with them, or dressing them up in adorable outfits? We all want the best for them, no matter the cost. But as we’ve learned, expensive doesn’t always mean better. In fact, some off-brand pet foods contain fewer preservatives, making them a healthier choice for your furry friend. Just check with your vet to find a generic brand that offers the same nutritional value as the pricey stuff—Bob the Cat will thank you!

17. Snack Foods

Did you know that you could cut down your monthly expenses significantly just by switching to store-brand snack items, such as cheese crackers, granola bars, crisps, and peanut butter? These store-brand items taste similar to brand snacks and cost less, as shown in this taste-testing Consumer Report.

18. Diapers

Off-brand diapers are a few of the best generic products to buy. However, not every generic brand will provide the same comfort and value, so it is vital to test the off-brands before buying in bulk.

19. Baby Formula

Like prescription medicine, the FDA regulates baby formula, too. This means that even off-brand baby formula is manufactured with the same safety standards as its brand-name counterpart.

20. Storage Containers

Storage containers are one of the best items to buy generic. Those TV-branded bins and plastic organizers often cost more without offering better quality. Plus, the money you save can go toward investing in glassware, which is a safer option for storing and serving food anyway.
