Flour on the table. Salt on your sleeves. You roll the dough to a quarter inch and cut mittens, stockings, and candy canes. The process is very similar to making cookies.

They come out of the oven pale and plain, but with a little paint, they turn bright and full of character. The mitten gets a bright red heart. The stocking turns pink with bold red stripes and tiny dotted pearls. The candy cane glows with thick red bands and creamy white.

When you hold it, the surface is a bit uneven and chalky, the way only a handmade piece can be.
