Have you ever looked at the growing pile of clothes and bags you never used and thought, “Hey, I could make good money selling all these!”

Well, thanks to Poshmark, you can! This is one of the most popular online marketplaces where you can buy and sell secondhand items, such as clothes, shoes, and accessories. With around 8 million active buyers, the platform has become a great way for people to earn money from home.

In fact, it’s one of the top online business ideas that doesn’t require a huge capital investment. You can start selling items that come from your closet!

Before calculating how much money you’ll make, remember that becoming successful on Poshmark isn’t just about taking a quick photo of your clothes. You also have to learn more about how to set up your shop and market your products with enticing descriptions! That way, you can gain an audience and grow your online business.

Ready to learn more? Here’s a quick guide on how to make money on Poshmark!

1. Why Poshmark Stands Out

Poshmark is one of the best apps to sell clothes for a reason, besides household names like eBay and Mercari. However, what makes it unique is how it combines online selling with social media-like features!

Reselling on Poshmark is more seller-friendly because of the unique features it offers, like easy sharing to different social media platforms. They also have a feature called Posh Parties, which are virtual shopping events where you can virtually meet more buyers who may be interested in your items.

Need more inspiration? Take a look at the case of Maria Jones of The Lemon Theory, who started selling clothes on Poshmark in 2017. Since she began her side hustle, she has garnered over $300,000 in sales!

2. Setting Up Your Poshmark Shop

You can create a free Poshmark account by signing up with your email. Alternatively, you can connect it with your Facebook or Google account.

From there, you’ll need to add your personal information and think of a name. I recommend coming up with a good business name that reflects your personality and the items you plan to sell. For example, if you want to sell vintage accessories and knickknacks, you can use “Thrifted Treasures” as your name.

Once you’ve inputted all information, you’ll reach your landing page, where you need to add a profile photo and write a short bio.

When choosing a profile photo, make sure you choose a clear photo or business logo that people will remember you by. The same goes for your bio, which should be short and sweet, talking about who you are and what you’ll be selling so people know what to expect.

Take note: everything has to reflect your business branding because consistency is key to gaining a loyal audience!

3. Sourcing Inventory

The first thing you can do is give your closet the cleaning it deserves!

Channel the Marie Kondo in you and start taking away things in life that no longer bring you joy. But instead of throwing items out, sell them on Poshmark to people who may find joy in them! Cleaning your closet is one of the low-cost ways to start selling on Poshmark and also a fun hobby that can actually make you money.

Did you know some of the most profitable items to sell on Poshmark come from thrifted items? Besides checking your closet, visit thrift stores and garage sales. You’ll be able to buy high-quality pieces at lower prices to sell for profit!

If you’re on the lookout for high-end pieces, make sure you acquaint yourself with how to spot authentic and fake items to maintain your shop’s reputation!

You might be wondering how you’ll know what the best-selling brands and items are on Poshmark. Well, the best thing you can do is to identify the current trends and popular items for the season.

For instance, if it’s summer season, you’ll want to sell beach hats, cute sundresses, and the like! Besides that, you’ll want to also brush up on the brands that don’t sell on Poshmark, as well as the ones that would attract buyers.

Brands like Chanel, Nike, and Lululemon are a hit among buyers, while Poshmark sellers report that Zara, J. Crew, and Urban Outfitters aren’t as popular.

4. Creating Irresistible Listings

Once you’ve got your shop and products set up, it’s time to create and publish listings to make money on Poshmark.

Let’s start with the images.

You need to take clear and well-lit photos of your items to make the first impression count. I suggest taking photos from multiple angles and close-ups so people can see every little detail.

It’s also best to edit your photos to remove any items from the background, crop images to center the product, and more. Pleasant-looking photos are more likely to receive more engagement! I recommend using apps like Instasize and PhotoCut for this.

When writing your product description, you want to be as detailed as possible. Mention the item’s condition, brand, size, color, and other specifics people need to know. You’ll also want to add relevant keywords so it shows up on Poshmark’s search engine!

Don’t know what kind of keywords to use? Include brand names and keywords that describe your items accurately. Let’s say you’re selling a floral dress, so you’ll want to add words like “boho” and “spring dress” to your listing title and description.

Another way to make an irresistible listing is the price. Obviously, the lower, the better. However, you want to balance competitive pricing while making a profit! You can entice buyers by offering promotions or discounts, such as opening sales seasonal promos, or by using Poshmark’s “Make an offer” feature.

5. Marketing and Promotion on Poshmark

The grind doesn’t stop after you publish your listings! You need to promote your items as well if you want to hook your target audience. What’s great about Poshmark is that they make it easy for sellers to widen their reach.

One of the top ways you can share your products is to join Posh Parties. These are virtual shopping events where you can share and sell items. These parties usually happen four times a day with differing themes, so join the one that fits your item’s category most. The parties can market specific brands, different departments, or various styles and trends.

Another way to promote your shop and listings is to cross-post on social media, like Facebook, TikTok, Instagram, and Pinterest. Try out social media strategies such as sharing on relevant groups and using the right hashtags to drive traffic to your Poshmark closet.

Besides sharing your listing around Poshmark and social media, you can promote your shop by posting engaging content as well. Some content ideas include showcasing customer feedback, sharing what you do as a Poshmark seller behind the scenes, or even how-to videos on styling your product offerings.

6. Mastering Sales, Shipping, and Customer Service

Now, on to the fun part: Sales! Here are a few helpful tips for selling on Poshmark.

Communication is key to garnering more sales. This means answering inquiries as soon as possible but still setting clear expectations in terms of your response times. Let customers know that you are readily available to answer messages during your business hours.

Besides answering quickly, remember that customers will always negotiate for the best price, just like us. When this happens, keep your profitability in mind, but also show empathy and clear communication. You can choose to meet halfway and agree on a price together, making it a win-win situation.

Other than product quality and customer service, you want to make sure your customers’ packages arrive as quickly and safely as possible! This is all part of customer satisfaction. Once you get a sale, it’s best to start packing it as soon as possible to have it delivered on time. When packing, you’ll want to not only use strong packaging but to personalize it as well with your logo and thank you card.

And finally, once customers receive their packages, make sure to check up on them and kindly request to share their feedback! That way, you can get repeat business from them and encourage new customers to choose your business.

7. Scaling Your Poshmark Business

There will always be room for growth in a business, and you shouldn’t just “wait and see.” You’ll need to analyze what you’re currently doing and see what you can do to improve.

Take advantage of tools like My Closet Insights, which allows you to monitor sales trends and other business data. This will help you know what items you should stock up on and other low-selling items you may need to put more effort into selling.

As you sell items and grow your business, you’ll want to further expand your product range. Don’t just stick to restocking items you have now! Offer new clothes or accessories that match your brand identity and are known to sell well, based on the data you collected.

You may also want to expand your business operations by outsourcing tasks, such as hiring someone to answer queries for you.

8. Overcoming Common Challenges

Just like any other business, you will come across challenges. It’s inevitable!

One of the most common challenges is differentiating yourself from the competition. As I mentioned above, it’s all about building a strong and consistent brand identity.

Another thing all sellers will experience is receiving negative reviews. You’ll never please everyone, and that’s okay! If you receive negative feedback, remember to stay professional and reply kindly. Instead of being defensive, use these as learning opportunities to improve your business.
